Nursing home investigated after death of man left out in sun

PINELLAS PARK, Fla. (AP) — A Florida nursing home is under police investigation after a 65-year-old man suffered second-degree burns and blisters on his abdomen, symptoms of dehydration and then died of heart failure.

Pinellas Park Police said Wilbert Henry Moten spent hours in the sun in a wheelchair on Saturday, when temperatures rose into the humid 90s.

Moten's health care proxy — which is like a guardian but for indigent patients — says no one from GraceWood Rehabilitation and Nursing Care called him when Moten died. Instead, Fernando Gutierrez says he was notified by the hospital.

Pinellas Park police say they're looking into whether abuse was involved.

State records show GateWood has been fined at least three times since late 2012 over the care of its residents.
