Nurse, teachers save LI boy suffering heart attack

NEW YORK (FOX 5 NEWS) - Sanketh Kumar was finishing his first warmup lap around the track in phys. ed. last month when he suddenly collapsed. He may not remember much, but the teachers at Herricks Middle School in New Hyde Park, Long Island, who are being hailed heroes, could tell you everything. In a matter of seconds, he took a turn for the worse. His heart stopped beating.

It was the first time anyone at the school had to use the AED. Registered nurse Dana Lieberman gave him one shock. From start to finish it took less than 4 minutes.

Doctors found an underlying heart condition. Sanketh spent two weeks in the hospital. They say the school's quick actions prevented the heart attack from damaging his other organs.

The 8th grader who loves math couldn't be happier to be back in school. He now has an internal defibrillator that will automatically shock his heart if it happens again. His father, Gopal, calls it nothing short of a miracle.

Sanketh's birthday is Friday. Normally he just has a few friends and family over to celebrate but this year they're going to his favorite restaurant and they invited all of the teachers that helped save his life.
