Kristen and Aric Crouch say they are safe after getting swept up in the crowd running from the massacre.

The couple was in Nice for a wedding at a later date. They were attending the Bastille Day party with a group of friends when the attack happened.

“My husband and I decided to walk back to the hotel. And we were walking back, and I heard what sounded like 2 pops. I assumed it was fireworks. And then all of a sudden, we just saw a crowd was coming and running from the opposite direction. So we decided to turn around and run,” Kristen said. “We didn't really know what was happening. It was just mayhem. And then we were luckily not too far away from that apartment we had been in and ran in there and took shelter and ran up to the apartment and locked the door. We had no idea what was going on but later found out that the incident occurred right outside of our hotel.”

Kristen said it’s hard to imagine so much horror coming from an event that was supposed to be a celebration.

“You would just never think something like this would happen. Nice is just such a calm and relaxing city, and you'd just never think something like this would happen,” she said. “We all just need to keep the world in our prayers. You just never know what will happen and what loved ones will be affected.”

Kristen said they have been in contact with their families members to assure them they were not hurt. She said none of her friends were injured either.

The couple plans to return to North Texas on Monday.
