NEW YORK (FOX5NY) - After the United Nations Security Council unanimously condemned North Korea's nuclear program and imposed new sanctions, the rogue nation promised "thousands-fold revenge" against the United States.
"This resolution is the single largest economic sanctions package ever leveled against the North Korean regime," U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Nikki Haley said Saturday.
Analysts say the measures could affect a third of North Korea's estimated $3 billion of annual exports. The Trump administration has pursued what it calls a pressure campaign against North Korea, isolating it economically and diplomatically to force it to surrender its nuclear weapons and ballistic missile programs.
"The strong U.N. Security Council resolution unanimously approved, working in coordination with China and Russia both, to put out a statement from the Security Council that I think is quite clear in terms of there being no daylight among the international community," U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson said.
North Korea has tested two intercontinental ballistic missiles since July 4. Administration officials said China is the key to their pressure campaign because the nation is responsible for 90 percent of North Korea's trade.
"It was a gut punch to North Korea to let them know the international community is tired of it and we are going to start fighting back," Haley told Fox News.
