NJ man made up story about bear attack: cops

POHATCONG TOWNSHIP, N.J. (AP) — A northern New Jersey man is accused of concocting a story that he was attacked by a bear, wasting emergency and wildlife resources for hours.

Jeffrey Wilson, 57, was charged Tuesday with providing false information to law enforcement. Authorities say the Pohatcong Township resident called authorities reporting a 500-pound black bear ran up to him and started swatting at him.

Police say they found Wilson bleeding from the left arm and he told officers the bear fled into a cornfield.

But investigators determined that Wilson's injuries weren't from a bear. They say the injuries were from a non-related accident that happened the night before.

Police say it's unclear what the motive behind the fabricated story was.

Wilson's telephone was disconnected.
