Muslim cop speaks out about bias incident

- NYPD Officer Aml Elsokary is still shaken up by an attack on her and her 16-year-old son near their home in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. She is receiving support from many including the city and Brooklyn Borough President Eric Adams.

The NYPD says the officer, while off duty, stopped Christopher Nelson, 36, from shoving her son. She says he cursed at her, said she was part of ISIS, that he would slit her throat, and she should go back to her country. Nelson is now charged with a hate crime.

The Muslim officer is a native New Yorker who was honored 2 years ago for running into a burning building and saving a baby and an elderly man.

Adams says he is contacting President-elect Donald Trump to meet with him and a contingent of Muslim police officers to discuss how negative rhetoric is impacting the escalation of hate crimes. Adams is also asking all district attorneys to no longer allow hate crime suspects to plea bargain down to lesser crimes.

Elsokary is encouraging victims of hate crimes to report them.
