A man who was leaving a Phoenix area hospital is accused of stealing an ambulance because he thought it was "too hot to walk home."
Mesa Police say Todd Shell, 37, had just been released from the Banner Desert Hospital around 11:30 a.m. Tuesday for a "heat related situation."
After deciding it was too hot, he walked back towards the hospital. He found the ambulance running in the bay while the crew was dropping off another patient. Shell decided to take the ambulance.
Officers used GPS to find the ambulance on the highway. Mesa officers and state troopers attempted to stop Shell, but they say he continued driving at normal speeds.
He eventually exited the freeway. Police say that Shell indicated that he wanted to buy a sandwich, but need to go home and get some money first. He said that he intended to return the ambulance.
The ambulance was not damaged.
Shell now faces two felony charges. It was unclear if he had a lawyer.
