A restaurant delivery man is hospitalized in serious condition after he was hit by a large section of a tree that was being cut down.  The tree was being removed by a contractor hired by the city's parks department.

It happened about 1 p.m. on Monday in the Red Hook section of Brooklyn.  It happened in the area of Richards St. and Visitation Place when the accident took place.

The victim, in his 50s, was rushed to Methodist Hospital with unknown but serious injuries.

Video from the scene showed the heavily damaged bike and pieces of the large tree in the back of a truck.

The parks department issued a statement saying, in part:  "Our thoughts are with the individual injured in this unfortunate accident. NYC Parks is conducting a thorough investigation of this incident."

The tree was being pruned as part of a post-Hurricane Sandy "remove and replace" program, according to the department.
