Judge sentences Long Island man who killed wife as kids tried to protect her

MINEOLA, N.Y. (AP) — A New York man who killed his wife as their children tried to protect her will spend decades behind bars.

A judge on Monday sentenced Robert Crumb, of Long Island, to 47 years to life, Newsday reported.

The Brooklyn janitor first paralyzed Maria Crumb with a knife in 2016. He threw their 12-year-old son off his back as the boy tried to stop the attack. Crumb then killed her.

Their 16-year-old daughter was wounded while trying to grab the knife.

A police chase ended when he drove into a gas pump in Brooklyn, causing an explosion.

Police had to use a stun gun on Crumb when he charged, knocking an officer unconscious.

Patty Kontonis told the court her daughter was an "angel" deeply devoted to her children. She said after the sentencing that justice was served.
