Suffolk County police chief to resign

YAPHANK, N.Y. (AP) — A suburban New York police chief who was the focus of a federal probe is resigning.

Suffolk County Police Commissioner Edward Webber released a statement on Tuesday saying Chief of Department James Burke will retire in the next 15 days.

He called Burke "one of the most outstanding supervisors, investigators, and trainers" in the department's history.

The federal probe began in 2013 after a man suspected of breaking into vehicles claimed that Burke had confronted him in a precinct interview room after his arrest on charges he stole items from the chief's SUV.

Burke has denied any wrongdoing. His lawyer said last year the investigation had been closed.

Webber says the department's Chief of Support Services Stuart Cameron will replace Burke.
