NYC police officer hurt in fatal shooting leaves hospital

NEW YORK (AP) — A police officer injured in the fatal shooting of a 21-year-old Brooklyn man during a scuffle with police officers has been discharged from the hospital.

The Daily News (http://nydn.us/2g83tcl ) reports that Officer Andris Bisogno smiled and waved to police officers as he left Jamaica Hospital at about 4 p.m. Sunday.

The officer and his partner had encountered Erickson Brito Saturday afternoon in the Van Dyke Houses in the Brownsville neighborhood while responding to a report of a suspicious person.

When they asked for ID, a scuffle ensued, and police say the man grabbed one officer's metal baton and struck both in the head. They then fired.

Bisogno suffered a gash to his head. The second officer suffered contusions.

Brito's family has denounced the shooting, saying deadly force wasn't necessary.
