Police: Escapee Richard Matt was drunk when killed

Convicted killer Richard Matt was drunk when a federal agent shot him in the woods in northern New York, three weeks after he and David Sweat pulled off a daring and sophisticated escape from a maximum-security prison, police said.

Toxicology results show that Matt had a blood alcohol content of .18 percent at the time of his death, according to the New York State Police. That is more than twice the level considered evidence of intoxication.

Matt and Sweat escaped from Clinton Correctional Facility on June 6, 2015, police said. They trudged for miles through the woods before separating.

On June 26, a U.S. Customs and Border Protection tactical team spotted Matt in Malone. One agent confronted Matt, who was armed with a shotgun, and shot him in the head.

An autopsy showed that Matt's legs were covered in bug bites, blisters, and abrasions.

Authorities captured Sweat two days later.
