Coast Guard rescues swimmer stranded at off-shore lighthouse

NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) — A Coast Guard crew rescued a swimmer who became stranded at an offshore lighthouse near New London, more than two hours after she was reported missing.

Coast Guard officials say the 20-year-old woman went swimming off a New London beach Wednesday night and was reported missing at about 10 p.m.

The Coast Guard crew found her at about 12:30 a.m. Thursday clinging to a rock at the base of the New London Ledge Light, which sits in Fishers Island Sound near the mouth of the Thames River.

The woman was brought to a local hospital to be treated for possible hypothermia. Her name and condition weren't released Thursday.
