ORLANDO, Fla. - The Orlando Magic honored a hometown hero at their Sunday afternoon game against the Atlanta Hawks.
Some Gainesville teens and a Gainesville police officer received the royal treatment this afternoon because of the officers approach to fighting crime.
Nine young people from Gainesville were enjoying their first ever NBA game. The kids were able to score autographed balls from the players and enjoyed front row seats to the game.
The Magic invited the teens and Gainesville police officer Bobby White to Sunday's game because of a decision he made several weeks ago.
Officer Bobby White went viral after dashcam video from his police cruiser was released by Gainesville Police Department. When Officer White responded to a noise complaint, he found some young men playing basketball in the street. Instead of scolding them, he decided to shoot some hoots with them.
At half time today, the Magic recognized Officer White as a hometown hero for being proactive and building relationships on the streets of Gainesville.
Officer White told the young hoop players that he is bringing back up for the next time they play basketball together. A rematch is definitely in order.
