HAMDEN, Conn. (AP) — Police are investigating after 18 cats were removed from a vacant apartment in Connecticut.

Police say the Hamden Animal Control Division responded to the apartment Wednesday morning for a report of animal cruelty. Animal control officers discovered two dead cats inside.

Police learned that a local animal shelter had removed 16 cats from the home on July 2. They were taken to a nearby animal hospital for medical treatment.

Police say the tenant moved out of the apartment several weeks ago and left behind the animals.

The Quinnipiac Valley Health District responded and condemned the property.

Police have not said whether anyone will face charges.

The investigation is ongoing.
