Remains of NY Marine killed in Korean War identified

The remains of a Marine from New York killed during the Korean War have been identified, U.S. military officials said.

Meredith Keirn's remains were identified earlier this year, according to the Department of Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency.

Keirn, of Niagara Falls, was a 24-year-old sergeant serving in the 1st Marine Division as a light machinegun section leader when he was reported killed during fighting on Nov. 30, 1950, in North Korea, the Pentagon said.

His remains were reportedly buried but couldn't be recovered after the war. In 2015, a South Korean citizen turned over the remains to U.S. forces.

DPAA scientists used DNA samples from his family and other evidence to identify the remains.

Information on funeral arrangements wasn't immediately available from military officials.
