Injured LIRR rider seeks answers about derailment

NEW YORK (FOX 5 NEWS) - Lonnie Garrett Jr. was sitting in a window seat of the second car on the Long Island Railroad train that derailed east of New Hyde Park Saturday night. He says all of a sudden he felt the train shake, heard a rumble and then felt the impact. He says he thought he was going to die. He says the impact jolted him from his seat. Cell phone video shows his head smashed into the baggage rack above him before it came crashing down. He was one of 33 injured. He says he feels pain in his knees, head, back, and neck.

LIRR officials say the train sideswiped a work train that was doing track maintenance. About 600 people were on board.

New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is thankful no one was killed. He says the NTSB is going to investigate the cause of the collision.

Lonnie Garrett Sr. is waiting for the explanation. Too many of these incidents have him questioning safety. Garrett Jr. says he hasn't thought about legal action. He just hopes to feel well enough to go back to work soon and hug his dad when he is in less pain.

The Long Island Rail Road anticipates normal service for Tuesday.
