Icy road blamed for multi-vehicle crash on Long Island

Traffic along westbound Sunrise Highway near Bohemia Parkway was back to normal Thursday afternoon, hours after what police are calling a chain reaction crash involving 29 vehicles.

Officials say the driver of an empty school bus skidded on ice and overturned. Behind it a FedEx truck jackknifed. What followed was a multi-vehicle wreck.

Twenty-nine cars were involved. Airbags deployed. Some facing the wrong way, others literally bumper to bumper, causing a traffic backup for exits.

A half mile east, Suffolk County police started backing cars off of Sunrise Highway.

Police said at least six people were taken to the hospital. All are expected to survive.
