Wolf stolen from animal preserve

- A hybrid wolf that had been turned into an ecology center by its owner after it became too aggressive has been stolen.

Nakita, a Mackenzie wolf, was included in a story by Fox 5 News in 2017 about the dangers of owning wild and exotic animals.

On Monday, the Suffolk County Police Department launched a ground and aerial search for the stolen hybrid wolf.

Police say whoever took the 7-year-old animal from the Holtsville Ecology Site and Animal Preserve in Brookhaven knew the workings of her enclosure. The fence surrounding the preserve on Buckley Road had been cut.

She was taken sometime between Sunday at 4 p.m. and Monday at 7 a.m.

The Suffolk County SPCA said the wolf had been domesticated and can't survive on its own. The SPCA is offering a $5,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of the person or persons responsible.

Police are asking anyone with information about the case to call 631-854-8552 or Crime Stoppers at 800-220-TIPS.
