Husband of Brittany Maynard lobbies for NY right-to-die bill

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) — The husband of a 29-year-old woman who moved to Oregon to legally end her life after being given six months to live is hoping his personal story convinces lawmakers in New York to pass right-to-die legislation.

Dan Diaz says he believes those who have watched a loved one suffer with terminal illness understand that people should have the option of choosing to end their life.

Maynard galvanized the effort to allow terminally ill people to end their lives when she moved from California to Oregon in 2014 after she was diagnosed with a lethal brain tumor.

Legislation in New York would require two doctors to certify that a terminal patient is competent to request life-ending drugs.

Following Maynard's death, California lawmakers voted to become the fifth state allowing end-of-life assistance.
