The gunman responsible for the largest mass shooting in United States history exchanged text messages with his wife during the massacre, according to law enforcement officials.

Omar Mateen reportedly texted his wife, Noor Salman, from inside a bathroom at Pulse nightclub on June 12.

At about 4 a.m., he asked her if she'd seen the news.

Salman at some point texted that she loved Mateen. She also reportedly tried calling him.

The FBI says it is investigating Salman and if she played any role in the massacre, specifically if she knew about her husband's plan.

It is not clear if Salman attempted to notify police about Mateen's actions.

50 people were killed in the shooting at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida.
