GULFPORT, Miss. (FOX 5 NY) - A bad smell diverted some police officers investigating a burglary in Mississippi to an unrelated home where they made a shocking discovery: more than a hundred guinea pigs living in "deplorable" conditions and the skeletal remains of dogs.
The cops cited the homeowner with animal cruelty and lack of a permit for having so many animals.
Staff members with Gulfport Animal Control and the local Humane Society responded to the mobile home to confiscate the guinea pigs.
The director of the Humane Society said kennels filled with animal feces were stacked from the floor to the ceiling inside the trailer.
Police said the homeowner wasn't selling the guinea pigs so they don't know why she had so many.
