Growing importance of Latino voters

27 million U.S. Hispanics are or will be eligible to vote in just a few days. Latino voters could tip the balance in key battleground states, like Florida. Traditionally a red state, Republicans have performed well with Latinos due in large part to the Cuban vote.

However in this election Luis Miranda, managing partner at the Mirram Group, says things can be different because of the Puerto Rican vote. According to Miranda, a million Puerto Ricans have moved into Florida in the last decade, changing the demographic and most likely this election. Miranda says many Cuban Americans are Republicans but the majority of Puerto Ricans are Democrats.

A new CNN/ORC poll shows Clinton at 49 percent among likely voters in Florida and Trump at 47 percent. The poll suggests the race has shifted in Nevada, with Trump now ahead 49 percent to 43 percent.

In 2008, Barack Obama won 76 percent of the Nevada Latino vote. According to a report from America's Voice, Latinos have been a key factor in Democratic victories for national offices across the state. And yet, instead of engaging Latino voters, Republicans have driven them away with anti-immigrant policy proposals, the report says.

Miranda says that in 20 years Latinos will become the most important political block to win a national election because Hispanics will impact the electoral vote not only in California, New York and Florida but many other states.
