Never spill your coffee again

- Spilled your coffee? Your day may be off to a rocky start, but physics is here to make sure it never happens again. A new study out of South Korea has determined that our coffee sloshes because we've been holding it wrong this whole time.

The scientists (no doubt fueled by caffeine) ran through equations, lab experiments, and test walks and finally published their findings in the journal Achievements in Life Sciences.

We've been holding our mugs by the handles or by wrapping our hands around the body of the cup. But to reduce the "magnitude of acceleration," researchers say the "claw method" is best. Put your hand over the top of the cup, and grip it just below the rim.

If that sounds like asking for a steam burn, the other solution is simply: walking backward. To keep balance, our bodies swing from side to side- which also makes for a smoother ride in our coffee cups.

We’ll be experimenting in the office kitchen- but we’ll be extra careful. If we trip walking backwards, the coffee is going everywhere, no matter how gently it was swirling in our cups. Anything for that sweet java.
