Ford developing bed to keep you from hogging it

Vehicle manufacturer Ford is hoping to give people a better night's sleep with the development of a bed that moves someone back into their "lane."

The "Lane-Keeping Bed" uses the same type of vehicle technology that nudges a steering wheel back in the right direction.

According to Ford Interventions, "pressure sensors identify when someone has strayed from their side of the bed and gently returns them to where they should be with the help of an integrated conveyor belt."

The bed is in the development stage as part of a series of so-called Ford Interventions, which apply automotive expertise to tackle everyday problems. No word yet when it might be mass produced.

“When sleeping together, many couples each have less space than a small child has in a single bed,” said Dr. Neil Stanley, a sleep expert and author of How to Sleep Well. “Humans are most vulnerable when sleeping, so we’re programmed to wake when something or someone touches us unexpectedly. If someone moves onto your side of the bed this defence mechanism will kick in and you’ll have a broken night, often while they continue to sleep soundly. I’ve seen it ruin relationships.”
