Fireworks explode in SUV on Thruway, 5 injured

An SUV carrying fireworks burst into flames on the New York State Thruway Monday night, injuring five people.

According to New York State police, all five passengers of the Lincoln Navigator were burned after an electrical problem ignited the fireworks in the trunk.

The explosion happened around 9:30 p.m.  Video shows the SUV in flames on the side of the southbound NYS Thruway.

The passengers suffered burns, two of which were severely injured and were taken to the hospital to be treated for their injuries.

The 5 passengers in the SUV are all adults and are said to be part of the same family from Mount Vernon in Westchester County.

The incident is under investigation.  Charges are pending against the people in the car since fireworks are illegal in New York.
