Eric Trump: Everything was stacked against my dad

Donald Trump's son Eric gave a wide-ranging interview to Fox 5's Good Day New York on primary day in the Empire State.

"It's wild, it's crazy, it's fun, it's energetic," Trump said of the campaign.  "This is uncharted territory.  No one has ever really gone into a political system, meaning an outsider, a businessman, especially for a presidential race."

He admitted that even he has been surprised at how well his father has performed during the primary season.

"I don't think anyone anticipated it.  Did I think that we were going to do a lot better than the 17 people up on that stage? Sure.  Did I always think we were going to be in the top three, four or five?  Yeah, absolutely because my father's a special guy and  he's incredibly share and he knows how to lead and he knows how to manage and he's got this charismatic, I mean, people gravitate to him.  They love him."

He went on to say, "Could you ever say that he was going to be in the driver’s seat coming into New York winning in all the polls in New York, I think anybody would call you delusional.  Everything was stacked against him.  He was truly the outsider."

On Trump's blunt and controversial style, his son says, "People often say 'Let Trump be Trump' and I think that's right."

He elaborated, "People want somebody who doesn't pitter-patter around the issues, who doesn't tip-toe, who's blunt, who speaks from the heart.  If you're Commander in Chief of the United States, there's some serious issues out there and not all of them are friendly.  In fact, most of them are tough and controversial and you need to be able to discuss them."

When asked it his father had ever embarrassed him during the campaign, Trump said, "No, he's never embarrassed me.  In fact, he's only made me proud."

Trump says primary day will be low-key during the actual vote.

"We'll be together as a family tonight in Trump Tower.  We're going to have a great victory party."

Eric Trump has become a target as he has championed his father.  Someone sent a letter containing a suspicious powder to him.

Trump says, "There's crazy people in the world, no question.  There's a lot of unfriendly people in the world and, you know, I think it almost comes with the territory."

Trump says his father personally picks the music he plays at his events.

"He loves it.  He loves his music.  That's my father.  That's what makes him special."

Asked why his father has not made the rounds at local restaurants like other candidates, Trump said, "New York is a special place.  He doesn't need to pander."

On his father potentially toning down his rhetoric, Trump said, "He's just that guy.  It's hard to change someone's DNA."
