Dog donated to NYC firehouse after 9/11 dies

A Dalmatian that was given to a New York City firehouse hit hard on 9/11 has died, the FDNY said. The dog -- named Twenty -- served as a mascot to the firefighters of Ladder 20 in Manhattan. She died this week, according to a Facebook post.

"She really helped to build the morale in the years following 9/11," FDNY Lieutenant Gary Iorio said on Facebook. "I can't say enough about what she did to help us. She went on all the runs, she'd jump in the truck, stick her head out the window and bark. She became a local celebrity."

Ladder 20 lost seven members on the morning of 9/11. In November 2001, two sheriff's deputies from Rochester donated Twenty to the firehouse to boost morale, according to the Daily News. The puppy was just 9 weeks old at the time.

"Today, Twenty has taken her final run to Heaven," Iorio said.
