Disney World to close due to Hurricane Matthew

As Hurricane Matthew bears down on Florida, Walt Disney World has decided to close as of 5 p.m. on Thursday.

The park decided to close based on the most recent forecasts for Hurricane Matthew.  All Walt Disney World theme parks, water parks, Disney Springs, miniature golf courses and ESPN Wide World of Sports Complex will remain closed through Friday, Oct. 7.

Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party at Magic Kingdom Theme Park had already been canceled for Thursday night.

This is believed to be only the 4th time that Disney World has closed since it opened in 1971.  It last closed in 2002 due to a power outage.  It closed after the terror attacks of 9/11.  This is the second hurricane that has forced the park's closure.  It was shut down in 1999 due to Hurricane Floyd.

Most of the other major attractions in Orlando will also be closed on Friday.   Many tourists would not be able to get there anyway because of airport closures.

SeaWorld Orlando will be closed on Friday, Oct. 7. The park will be open from 10 a.m. to 7: p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 8, with normal Spooktacular activities from noon – 7 p.m.  SeaWorld's water park, Aquatica Orlando will be closed on Thursday and Friday. 

Due to severe weather brought on by Hurricane Matthew, the Coca-Cola Orlando Eye will be closed Thursday and Friday until weather conditions improve and it is safe to begin operations again.  For those who are unable to experience the Coca-Cola Orlando Eye, tickets will remain valid for 30 days.

LEGOLAND Florida Resort will remain closed Friday, Oct. 7, but LEGOLAND Hotel will be open to admit arriving guests. They expect to operate as scheduled Saturday, Oct. 8, but will continue to monitor the storm’s projected path and will make adjustments as necessary.

Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex will be closed Friday, Oct 7. Programs such as ATX and Overnight Adventures are also canceled.   They anticipate reopening on Saturday, Oct 8 9 am - 6 pm.

Universal Studios, Islands of Adventure and City Walkwill be closed Friday. Normal operation in effect for Saturday at this time.
