Body dragged, set on fire in East Harlem building

A man reportedly dragged a woman's body into the stairwell at the DeWitt Clinton Houses in East Harlem Tuesday and set it on fire before returning home and slitting his own throat.

Firefighters responding to a call about a small fire at the building at 107 East 105th St.  discovered the body in the 9th floor stairwell just before 7 a.m.  The corpse was stuffed inside a garbage bag and was dragged from a nearby building, according to witnesses.

There was a trail of blood leading to the building.

A witness told the NY Daily News that he saw the man drag the body, which was naked except for a pair of  black heels, out of the elevator and set it on fire.

The man then ran out of the building to another apartment in the same housing project where he cut himself.  He was taken to Harlem Hospital.  He was expected to survive but was listed in critical condition.

Police said an investigation was continuing.  A relative of the suspect says he was innocent and didn't kill anyone, according to DNAInfo.
