Child dubbed 'Bernie Baby' dies suddenly

A baby seen in popular photos dressed in a white-haired wig and over-sized glasses with Democratic presidential candidate Bernie Sanders has suddenly died.

"Bernie Baby," as the child was affectionately referred to on social media, died Feb. 25 in Los Angeles of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, a relative told the Associated Press.

Sanders is seen holding Oliver Jack Carter Lomas-Davis, 3 months at the time, during a rally in Las Vegas on Feb. 14.

His mother, Susan Lomas, an avid supporter of Sanders, posted the photo and several others of the cheerful child greeting the senator from Vermont.

Oliver was four months old.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, SIDS is defined as the sudden death of an infant less than 1 year of age that cannot be explained after a thorough investigation is conducted, including a complete autopsy, examination of the death scene, and a review of the clinical history.

About 1,500 infants died of SIDS in 2014. SIDS is the leading cause of death in infants 1 to 12 months old.
