Aurora Borealis show in U.S.

A rare cosmic light show known as the Aurora Borealis or Northern lights made an appearance in the United States late Tuesday.

Time lapse video captured in Nebraska shows the changing sky's colors and what looks like moving lights.

Earlier in the day, the Geophysical Institute at the University of Alaska in Fairbanks reported that the aurora borealis would be highly active at night and into Wednesday morning in the Northeast.

NOAA even issued a magnetic storm watch because a high speed solar wind stream from the Sun would be hitting the Earth.  That would increase the chances of the aurora being more widespread.

That meant there was the potential for the natural display in all of New York, New Jersey and Connecticut.

But you would need to be in a dark area (not New York City) and have a  clear view of the northern skies.

Experts also say the best chance is in the middle of the night, when the sun is on the other side of the planet.
