You can hail NYC green cabs with an app

- Getting around New York City is rarely easy. And residents who live in the boroughs outside of Manhattan have added challenges with distance, cost and unreliable mass transit. But now they have a new way to hail a green cab at a flat rate.

The chances are good that you've seen green cabs, also known as Boro Taxis, on the streets. For a while there, it looked like they might be casualties of app-based ride services. But no more. The Taxi and Limousine Commission started a two-year pilot program with apps like Waave and Myle for customers.

"Passengers get the quick convenience of a taxicab, and the price certainty of a for-hire vehicle, while drivers can offer a new product that is already popular with many riders," TLC Commissioner Meera Joshi said in a statement.

Before the apps were offered, the green cabs would pick up street hails and go by the metered rate, which could be a lot with Manhattan traffic. But for rides booked through the apps, passengers get a lower flat rate guaranteed.

Drivers also have more options and more opportunities, according to Jay Jalil, a green cab driver. He said the apps are convenient for riders and drivers.

The green cab apps also offer advantages to those traveling with small children and baby strollers and people with disabilities. They'll be able to get a vehicle that can accommodate them comfortably and safely.
