Akai Gurley's family reacts to verdict

After nearly three weeks of the trial and jury deliberations, there were emotional reactions after a verdict came in the case against Police Officer Peter Liang.

For the family of Akai Gurley, there is a sense they've taken a first big step towards justice.

Family members had been in the courtroom every day.

Scott Rynecki, attorney for Gurley's domestic partner Kimberly Ballinger, said there is still more to be done.

"I think he should have to pay for what he did," said Ballinger during 'Good Day New York' on Friday.

One juror who did not want his name used fought back the emotion. He said it was a difficult decision.

One supporter of Liang told us he was upset with the verdict. Some say he has been made a scapegoat for past injustices.

There was also reaction from Esaw Garner, the widow of chokehold victim Eric Garner.

The officer in that case was never indicted, and Garner said she is happy for the Gurley family and for the future.

A wrongful death lawsuit is pending. Rynecki and Gurley's family are back in court at the end of February.
