Ahmad Khan Rahami arraigned on Chelsea bomb charges

Ahmad Khan Rahami appeared frail and much older than his age of 28 when he appeared in federal court in Lower Manhattan to hear the federal charges against him on Thursday.

An 8-count indictment charged Rahami with the bombing in Chelsea and the planting of another pressure cooker bomb a few blocks away that failed to explode in September. No one was killed, but dozens were hurt.

His federal public defender entered a not guilty plea. When Judge Richard Berman asked Rahami if he understood his plea, he responded "Yes, sir." That is all he said in court.

Rahami is being held at the Metropolitan Correctional Center, a federal prison in Lower Manhattan. He is also undergoing medical treatment from the injuries he sustained from a shootout with police in Linden, New Jersey, the day he was arrested. One of the bullets struck his liver. Judge Berman said he will do whatever he can to ensure that Rahami receives the treatment he needs.

His next court day in New York is December 19. Rahami is also charged in federal court in New Jersey with a bomb that exploded in Seaside Park and in state court in New Jersey for the shootout with Linden cops.
