REVIEW: 'Straight Outta Compton'

Simone Boyce reviews "Straight Outta Compton."

- "Straight Outta Compton" is an explosive, unapologetic biopic revealing how five rebels put Compton on the map and brought gangsta rap to the forefront of pop culture.

We witness the lyrical genius of a young Ice Cube, the raw talent of Eazy E and the beginnings of Dr. Dre's multimillion dollar empire. Those rap icons are portrayed by relatively unknown young cast members who deliver surprisingly compelling performances. Corey Hawkins plays Dr. Dre, Jason Mitchell stars as the late Eazy E and Ice Cube's son -- O'Shea Jackson Jr. -- looks and acts so much like his father it's freaky.

While producers Dr. Dre and Ice Cube didn't include some of the more unflattering aspects of their rise to fame, the film doesn't shy away from the hard truths that inspired N.W.A's controversial gangsta rap lyrics that often reflected the community's animosity towards police.

Directed by Compton-born F. Gary Gray, this ode to West Coast rap is thrilling and from the heart. "Straight Outta Compton" is one of the best films we've seen all summer.
