Week-long celebration of Kwanzaa begins

The week long celebration of Kwanzaa started on Saturday.

People gathered in Lower Manhattan to kick off the holiday with a variety of festivities.

Kwanzaa is based on traditional African culture and celebrates family, community responsibility, commerce and self-improvement.

The name comes from a Swahili term meaning "first fruits."

The celebration comes to an end on January 1st.
