Underground tour of East Side LIRR project

- Dr. Michael Horodniceanu, president of MTA Capital Construction, gave Fox 5 an underground tour of the construction project bringing the LIRR to Grand Central Terminal.

Fox 5 went deep in the caverns and tunnels of GCT where LIRR trains will eventually stop. The LIRR will have two separate levels with four platforms and eight tracks. Seven escalators will go 180 feet down. [SEE PHOTOS]

The 350,000-square-foot concourse will stretch from 43rd Street to 50th Street. According to the MTA, workers removed 1,000 feet of debris out of this area. That is taller than the Chrysler Building. The debirs is loaded on conveyer belts and moved to Queens, where trucks pick it up and remove it.

The $10 billion East Side Access project will bring 160,000 passengers every day from Long Island through a station in Queens, the AP reported.

Construction is about 60 percent of the way done. It is set to be complete in 2022.
