Trump conversation with Mexico president made public

- President Donald Trump repeatedly implored the President of Mexico to stop saying his country would not pay for a border wall, according to a transcript of the January 27 conversation obtained by the Washington Post.

"We cannot say that anymore because if you are going to say that Mexico is not going to pay for the wall, then I do not want to meet with you guys anymore because I cannot live with that," said Trump during his first conversation as president with the Mexican leader

"I am willing to say that we will work it out, but that means it will come out in the wash and that is okay. But you cannot say anymore that the United States is going to pay for the wall. I am just going to say that we are working it out."

Trump has called for a wall to be constructed at the border with Mexico since he began campaigning for President to stop the flow of illegal immigrants, drugs and "bad hombres."

President Enrique Pena Nieto has said that would not happen. He reiterates that during their phone conversation.

"You have a very big mark on our back, Mr. President, regarding who pays for the wall," said Neito. "This is what I suggest, Mr. President – let us stop talking about the wall. I have recognized the right of any government to protect its borders as it deems necessary and convenient. But my position has been and will continue to be very firm saying that Mexico cannot pay for that wall."

Trump responds saying Neito "cannot say that to the press because I cannot negotiate under those circumstances."

Neito responds: "Let us look for a creative way to jump over this obstacle."

The White House did not comment, but according to the Washing Post, an official said:  “The president is a tough negotiator who is always looking to make the best possible deals for the American people.”

After the hour-long phone conversation the Mexico administration canceled plans for Pena Nieto to visit the White House.
