Heavily armed security for Good Friday services

- There is a significant show of force from the NYPD outside St. Patrick's Cathedral on Good Friday, the most solemn day on the Christian calendar.

The increased security there and at churches across New York City is similar to what has been seen outside synagogues for Passover this week.

Timothy Cardinal Dolan is presiding over services at the Manhattan cathedral ahead of the Easter weekend.

Police are on high alert in the wake of deadly bombings at two Coptic Christian churches in Egypt last weekend. Forty-four people were killed and more than 100 others were injured. The Islamic State claimed responsibility for the attack.

There have been no specific terror threats to New York City on Good Friday or the Easter weekend when Christians around the world commemorate the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his resurrection on Sunday.

The 'way of the cross' or the journey Jesus took to Calvary where he was crucified, is remembered with the faithful taking part in processions like one in Brooklyn Friday morning. Hundreds gathered to pray and reflect on Jesus' death.
