NEW YORK (FOX5NY) - Don't believe everything you hear on social media. That's the word from Suffolk County Police after reports of menacing clowns on Long Island.
Police Chief Stu Cameron says officers in his department have not witnessed any individuals wearing clown costumes or acting menacing after receiving reports of various incidents.
Chief Cameron says, "We understand this may be a social media prank throughout the country, but we take quite seriously all calls that involve intentional harassment, trespassing, disturbing of the peace, and reported activity that results in the citizens of our county feeling threatened."
Suffolk police are monitoring social media and warn that anyone trespassing or making prank calls to 911 will be arrested.
Cameron adds that there have been no reported assaults nor credible threats against public safety within the county.
