2 NYPD officers taken to hospital after shooting

Two NYPD officers are recovering following a police involved shooting in Brooklyn that left the suspect dead.

Authorities said the man attacked the officers, but the suspect's family is telling a different story.

Omahis Gomez Brito was distraught after finding out her brother; 21 year old Erickson Gomez Brito was shot and killed in a police involved shooting on Saturday afternoon.

"I want justice for my brother,” Brito’s sister said.

Police said at around one o'clock two uniform officers from the housing bureau PSA 2 responded to a 911 call reporting a suspicious man in the hallway of the Van Dyke houses on Sutter Ave in the Brownsville section of Brooklyn. Family members told Fox 5 his aunt lives on the first floor.

"As they approached the suspect they asked for identification, there was a scuffle,” reported the police.

According to authorities, the officer removed his mental baton, but the suspect grabbed it and began assaulting them.

"The male officer suffered a two inch gash on his scalp and the female officer was hit several times in the head,” said the NYPD.

Both officers shot the suspect several times. Brito was pronounced dead at the scene.

The family said he was on medication, but not of mental issues. They said Brito had a drug addiction a few years back.

Both officers were taken to Jamaica Hospital in stable condition. As for the family, they are now demanding answers from the police department.
