The Dish: Denino's Pizzeria and Tavern

- New York City has some of the best pizza in the world. For decades this has been one of the most popular spots. Denino's is a New York City pizza institution, feeding hungry Staten Islanders for almost a hundred years. Carlo Denino opened the spot in the early 1920s, and it's been buzzing ever since.

It originally opened as a confectionery soda shop, but owner Michael Burke says it was not the soda that put his family's place on the map. In 1951, the store added pizza, and it became a big hit. Michael has been working here since he was a kid. He started at the bottom and learned every job.

One of Denino's most famous pies is the MOR (meatball, onions and ricotta) pie. And then there is the garbage pie, which has basically everything but the kitchen sink on it. The pie is loaded with mushrooms, onions, sliced pepperoni, and meatballs, and finished off with homemade sausage.

Michael says a big part of the success is in the dough. They make it every single morning using a barrel mixer, which is more than 60 years old.

And the crust is extra crispy, giving this place its motto: "In Crust We Trust." the bottom of the pie is very crunchy because they use breadcrumbs.

This month, Denino's opened another New York location in Greenwich Village.

The pizza is so good that it has a reputation around the globe. Denino's is still making the mother land proud after all this time.
