In Your Neighborhood: Gowanus

- Gowanus is a Brooklyn neighborhood in transition. For years it was viewed as an undesirable place to live, known mostly for its famously toxic Gowanus Canal. But things are changing. 3 years ago the EPA approved a $506 million canal cleanup.

Now businesses like the Gowanus Souvenir Shop are thriving and poking fun at the area's image. Gowanus has attached homes and brownstones that sit next to new apartment buildings.  Businesses like Whole Foods are investing in Gowanus, just like the Bell House, a music venue inside an old warehouse.

Because Gowanus used to be so industrial, there's still no main shopping thoroughfare. But it does have a vibrant food scene.

For a sweet treat, residents flock to Ample Hills Creamery, where the ice cream is made in house. Two of the most popular flavors are Ooey Gooey and Salted Crack. Both are award winning.

Hey Hey Canteen just opened on 4th Avenue and is getting high marks for its food and vibe. It's Asian comfort food that's also healthy.

Is Gowanus the next Williamsburg or Bushwick? Now that remains to be seen. But one thing is for sure: things are looking up in Gowanus.
