CPR not enough to save gator at Ohio zoo

- CPR was not enough to save a male alligator at the Columbus Zoo.

Zoo officials said the 28-year-old alligator had been under veterinarian care for a few weeks for a respiratory condition.

He became weak on Saturday and wasn't breathing. A photo taken by a guest at the zoo shows the team trying to revive the alligator by performing CPR.

"The animal care team administered CPR by turning him on his side for chest compressions, which was successful in saving his life," zoo officials said.

Despite their efforts, however, his condition deteriorated and he died later that day after he was transported to the Animal Health Care Center.

The alligator was about 300 pounds and 10 feet long.
