Apple patents virtual reality headset

Apple has applied for a patent on a virtual reality device.

Tech giant Apple Inc. is getting into the virtual reality world. Apple just obtained a patent for an iPhone-compatible headset. This would be a head-mounted display that could hold an iPhone. Users could then view the content of the phone using the headset.

The filing doesn't specifically mention virtual reality, but it is clear that is where Apple is going. The company applied for this patent seven years ago.

Apple isn't the first one to go after this concept. Samsung already has a Gear VR headset that works with a smartphone.

Facebook bet big on virtual reality as well when it bought headset maker Oculus Rift for $2 billion in 2014.

Apple hasn't made any announcements about the new technology but it is posting job openings that focus on virtual reality.
