GULFPORT, Fla. - Four students at a Pinellas County high school had to be transported to the hospital after eating drug-laced gummy candies passed around to several students, school officials said Monday.
School officials said a student brought the candies in to Boca Ciega High School. Seven students consumed them, but four were taken to All Children's Hospital as a precaution.
School officials said the parents of the students who were transported were notified.
Gulfport police say they believe the drug-laced candy may have been made by the student who distributed it. One student said her 16-year-old friend who ate the candy in class didn't know it had drugs in it. "She was dazing, she had her head down, she was kind of in a trance. You couldn't really talk to her. she couldn't function well. she was kind of just real slow, kind of," said the student.
None of the students were identified because they were minors.
The school is working with the Gulfport Police Department, which is investigating the incident.
