It was a shocking discovery for residents of one Florida apartment complex when they spotted a 12-foot crocodile sunning itself on their community beach.

It happened in Cape Coral on Tuesday afternoon.

Folks who live there say they had never seen it before.

“Well, we have a sign over to our left at the children's playground- ‘do not feed the alligators’ -and we see children here at the beach quite often, but you wonder,” said one local. “It's scary."

Another neighbor was even more surprised at the sighting, saying he’d never even seen an alligator -- let alone a crocodile -- in the area.

Local wildlife officers were told about the incident, but reportedly didn't take action to remove the crocodile.

They said the animal already had a tag, meaning authorities had made contact with it in the past.
