Firefighters and Nature Coast EMS paramedics had an early start on celebrating the new year by welcoming an unexpected set of twins into the world while out in the field.

The Citrus County Sheriff's Office said a call came around 12:30 a.m. for a woman going into labor. Firefighters were the first on the scene and found the woman in the bathroom. The two-person crew helped her to the bedroom while they waited for an ambulance.

The woman told them her due date was March 15, 2016.

In the few minutes they waited for an ambulance, the first baby - a girl - was born at 12:55 p.m. at the home.

EMS got there minutes later. They cut the umbilical cord and took mom and baby to the ambulance.

While on the way to the hospital, the second baby - a boy - was born about five minutes into the trip.

When they got to the hospital, staff took the mother to the OB ward. Staff there said the mother and babies were doing well soon after they arrived.

Thursday, the firefighters and EMS who helped deliver the babies and transport them with their mom spoke to media about the experience. They said, in spite of having no pain medication, the mother delivered both babies without difficulty.

They said the mom told them she had two children already, making the twins her third and fourth born. They said it was a very rewarding call with the best outcome possible.
