Raccoon that attacked NJ boy was rabid

New Jersey health officials say a raccoon that attacked a 6-year-old boy was rabid.

Aryan Gavali was headed to school in Elmwood Park on Wednesday when the raccoon ran across the street, jumped on his back and crawled onto his face. The child suffered lacerations to his face, including a deep cut under his right eye.

A spokesman for Bergen County said Friday that authorities have confirmed the raccoon was rabid.

The child's father tells The Record newspaper that his son is eating and sleeping well and is taking antibiotics.

A man used a pole to beat and kill the raccoon as it gnawed on the boy's face.
